Joys of renting

We weren't particularly fortunate in our choice of house to rent before we moved to where we currently live.

Certainly we'd picked quite a nice house, not too expensive and with very nice neighbours but there was one major problem.

The woman we were renting off was going bankrupt and even though we were paying her rent, she wasn't paying off the mortgage she had on the house. Of course we didn't find this out until a representative from the mortgage company called round one day.

He was as surprised to find people renting the house as we were to find out the house was about to be repossessed.

It worked out alright though - we managed to wangle an extra month in the house since we assured the mortgage company we had no intentions of squatting, and that covered the deposit we'd paid.

However, it wasn't until we were saying our goodbyes to the very nice lady who lived next door - best neighbour I've ever had - that she told us it seemed nobody who lived in that house ever stayed their very long.

She'd moved in when the estate was built and since it was a decent place to live it was rare for an empty house to become available, but our house had quite a high turnover rate.

The first family to live in moved out after their young son drowned in the stream at the bottom of our garden. Our neighbour hadn't told us the story sooner because she didn't want to freak us out, in case we were the sort of people who'd be upset at something like that.

Since then the longest tenancy had only been a couple of years. She said for some reason everyone who lived there always encountered something that led to them moving out. We were only there nine months.

Thankfully we live in a nice place now.
